Google I/O 2026: Largest Update to Web Search in 25 Years

Google I/O 2026: Largest Update to Web Search in 25 Years

At yesterday's Google I/O, Google introduced a comprehensive overhaul of its web search, described as the largest update in over 25 years. The new features aim to significantly enhance user experience and make interaction with the search engine more dynamic. A central element of the update is the new intelligent search field, which adapts dynamically and provides users with more space to formulate their queries precisely. Google emphasizes that this search field delivers AI-powered suggestions in real-time as users type, facilitating the search for information. Users can now also search across formats by using text, images, videos, or tabs in Chrome as inputs.

The rollout of the new search field begins today in all countries and languages where the AI mode is available, including Germany. Google plans to gradually roll out the new features to all users to ensure a smooth integration. Another highlight of the update is the search agents, which are exclusively available to paying Google customers. These agents can be individually created, customized, and managed to gather information from the internet and keep users informed about relevant news. They analyze a variety of sources, including blogs, news portals, and social media posts, to continuously keep users updated.

Information agents are designed to meet specific user requirements. For example, they can assist in apartment searches by capturing desired criteria and continuously looking for suitable offers. Users receive notifications as soon as relevant information becomes available. The new features of the information agents will initially be available in summer 2026 for users with a Google AI Pro and Ultra subscription. This means that not all users will have access to these advanced features, creating a clear distinction between paid and free services.

Additionally, Google has expanded the capabilities of agent-based booking in search. Users can now specify criteria for services and events to find the best options. For instance, they can search for a private karaoke room available on a Friday night that serves food. The search displays current prices and availability and allows direct bookings through preferred providers. For certain categories, such as tradespeople or cosmetics, users can also ask Google to call providers directly to obtain information or make bookings.

This feature will also be available in the USA starting summer 2026, significantly easing interaction with local service providers. Google's new features aim to enhance the usability and efficiency of web search. With the integration of AI technologies and dynamic search fields, a revolution in user experience is expected. Google has announced that the full implementation of the new features will occur in the coming months. "The new intelligent search field makes it easier for you to ask questions and gives you direct access to our most powerful AI tools," a Google spokesperson stated during the presentation.
