Windows 11 Update Introduces New Recovery Feature
On October 28, 2026, Microsoft released the preview update KB5127936 for Windows 11 in versions 25H2 and 26H2. This update raises the operating system builds to 26200.9818 and 26300.9818, respectively. It is an optional update that is being rolled out gradually, meaning that not all new features will be available on every machine immediately. The changes are expected to be made generally available on Windows 11 devices at a later date.
One of the most significant new features is the introduction of the Cloud Reinstall function. This allows users to reinstall Windows 11 directly using a Windows image downloaded from the internet. The necessary device drivers will then be obtained via Windows Update, which means that no USB stick or custom installation media is required. This feature can also be utilized when Windows fails to start, by accessing it through the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE). For users who can still access Windows, the option for reinstallation can be found under Settings > System > Recovery.
Before the reinstallation, users have the option to decide whether their personal files should be removed. Additionally, there is a secure storage wipe feature that can be useful before handing over a PC. Microsoft notes that this process cannot be undone, so a prior data backup is recommended. Another update pertains to the recovery environment itself. WinRE can now adopt Wi-Fi profiles already stored in Windows, meaning that devices can automatically connect to known networks during certain recovery processes. This saves users from having to re-enter credentials, significantly simplifying the recovery process.
In addition to the recovery feature, the update brings several improvements for everyday use of the operating system. The File Explorer will now display search results more uniformly, making it easier to capture important information such as file name, location, and modification date. These changes are intended to enhance usability and improve efficiency in file management. The address bar in File Explorer also receives a handy shortcut. By entering the character ~, users can directly access their own user profile.
For example, entering ~\AppData will take users directly to the corresponding subfolder. This feature is designed to simplify and speed up navigation within the system. A revamped context menu is another new feature of the update. This menu can now be opened more quickly and customized more individually. Microsoft has announced that the new features will be rolled out gradually, so not all users will have immediate access to them.
The gradual rollout of the update means that some users may have to wait longer for the new features. Microsoft plans to roll out the update to all users by the end of March 2026. The new features and improvements are expected to significantly enhance the user experience with Windows 11. Update KB5127936 is part of Microsoft's ongoing efforts to increase the stability and usability of Windows 11. The new features are designed to give users more control over their systems and facilitate recovery in case of issues.
