Fitbit Air Receives Comprehensive Update with New Features
Google has provided the Fitbit Air, its screenless fitness tracker, with a significant update. The new feature "Health Guardian" offers subscribers of Google Health Premium monthly reports that include recommendations for improving their health and fitness. This system aims to identify long-term trends and help users achieve their goals more effectively. The update also brings an enhanced automatic workout detection feature. While the Fitbit Air previously could recognize only 10 workouts without user input, it is now capable of automatically identifying 100 different exercises.
This improvement has been made possible through optimized contextual analysis in the Google Health app, which recognizes users' typical workouts. The accuracy of automatic detection has doubled, significantly enhancing the user experience. This functionality is similar to the "Health Report" feature already available to users of the Whoop Strap, indicating that Google is trying to increase the competitiveness of the Fitbit Air. In addition to the functionality, Google has expanded the Fitbit Air's compatibility with a variety of third-party apps. Users can now interact with "Flo Health" for tracking menstrual cycles and "MyFitnessPal" for logging meals and nutritional values, among others.
In the U.S., a connection to Abbott's "Lingo" is also possible to integrate blood sugar data. Another highlight of the update is the new metal mesh band, which transforms the Fitbit Air into a fashionable accessory. This design change could increase interest in the device and set it apart from other fitness trackers that focus more on functionality. However, there is also negative news for Fitbit users. Google has discontinued the classic Fitbit app, meaning that users attempting to access it will now be redirected to the newer Google Health app.
This change requires a Google account, which could pose a hurdle for many users. The discontinuation of the classic Fitbit app marks the end of an era for the software that made Fitbit one of the leading brands in the fitness tracker market. Users must now adapt to the new app, which may not offer all the features of the old app. In addition to the new features of the Fitbit Air, Google has introduced the Fitbit Edge, which, however, lacks some features present in the previous model, the Fitbit Charge 6.
This could influence users' decisions on whether to upgrade to the latest model or stick with the Fitbit Air. The new features of the Fitbit Air and the design changes could help expand the user base and strengthen the Fitbit brand in competition with other fitness trackers. The rollout of the update comes in a market increasingly characterized by the demand for personalized health solutions. The update for the Fitbit Air was rolled out in October 2026, and users can now take advantage of the new features.
