Windows 11 Receives New Features in August Update

On August 12, 2026, Microsoft provided new features for Windows 11 as part of the monthly Patch Day. In addition to closing numerous security vulnerabilities and improving application launch speed, several detail enhancements were introduced. These updates were already included in the optional update from July 2026 but are now available by default for all users. One of the most noticeable changes concerns the File Explorer, which now displays file sizes in more understandable units.

Instead of kilobytes, the size of larger files will now be indicated in megabytes or gigabytes. This significantly improves readability, as a file of 8 gigabytes will no longer be displayed as 8,388,608 kilobytes, but simply as 8 GB. Additionally, users can now open a folder in a new tab using a middle mouse click from the address bar or the home page. This feature is intended to facilitate navigation within the system and enhance user-friendliness. The voice control of Windows has also received an update that allows for filtering out other voices and background noises, improving clarity.

The Windows search function has been optimized to better handle typos and spelling errors. Users are expected to receive relevant search results despite such mistakes. This improvement aims to increase the efficiency of the search function and enhance the user experience. Another significant update concerns Windows Hello, which now also supports external fingerprint readers. Previously, only built-in scanners could be used, increasing flexibility for users who rely on external devices.

This change could be particularly important for users of laptops and tablets who frequently use external hardware. The touchpad gestures have also been revised. Users can now adjust the scroll and zoom speed and benefit from accelerated scrolling. These adjustments are intended to make interaction with the touchpad smoother and more intuitive. Additionally, improvements have been made to the taskbar and power and battery settings.

These changes aim to optimize the user interface and increase energy efficiency. Microsoft has also announced that the number of computers receiving new certificates for Secure Boot has been further expanded. After installing the August update, the Windows 11 versions 25H2 and 24H2 will have build numbers 26200.9165 and 26100.9165, respectively. However, Microsoft does not provide specific timelines for when the new features will be rolled out to all computers. The distribution will occur gradually, so not all users will have access to the updates simultaneously. The new features are expected to enhance the overall user experience and improve the efficiency of the operating system. Microsoft plans to roll out the updates to all users by the end of 2026.
