Smart #2: Comeback of the Fortwo as an Electric Car

Smart has unveiled the new #2 at the Paris Motor Show, which succeeds the Fortwo. The vehicle remains true to its compact format and accommodates two people. With a length of just 2.75 meters, the Smart #2 is designed for tight urban environments. The turning radius is under 7 meters, making it easier to maneuver in the city. The electric motor of the Smart #2 delivers 60 kW (82 hp) and drives the rear axle.

The battery has a capacity of 35.8 kWh, enabling a range of up to 290 kilometers according to WLTP. Fast charging from 10 to 80 percent is said to be possible in just 20 minutes. The top speed is 140 km/h, and the sprint from 0 to 100 km/h takes 11.6 seconds. Inside the Smart #2, there is a 10.1-inch touchscreen as well as a separate digital driver display. The two seats are connected by a central console, which facilitates exiting as there are no obstructive elements between the seats.

The tailgate is split, improving access to the trunk in tight parking situations. Standard equipment includes numerous driver assistance systems, including adaptive cruise control, a highway assistant, a lane-keeping assistant, a blind-spot monitor, a high beam assistant, V2L, a rearview camera, and traffic sign recognition. These features are intended to enhance safety and comfort while driving. In Germany, the Smart #2 will be offered in several trim levels.

The Pure variant starts at €19,990 and charges at a maximum of 7.4 kW. The Pure+ trim starts at €20,990 and includes features such as heated seats for the driver. The Premium variant, which includes additional features like ambient lighting and a heated seat for the passenger, starts at €24,490. The Couture variant will be produced in a limited edition of only 999 units and costs €25,690. All trim levels have the same battery capacity and motor power, but no additional extras are selectable, simplifying the decision for a variant.

The market launch of the Smart #2 is planned for October 2026, with deliveries expected to begin in the second quarter of 2027. With this model, Smart aims to combine urban mobility with state-of-the-art electric mobility to meet the needs of city dwellers. The introduction of the Smart #2 occurs in an increasingly competitive market for electric vehicles, where numerous manufacturers are vying for buyers' favor. The compact design and extensive equipment could give the new model an advantage. Smart aims to make electric mobility accessible to a broader customer base. With the new Smart #2, another chapter in the brand's history is being opened, addressing the needs of modern city residents. According to Smart, the first vehicles are expected to be delivered to customers in the second quarter of 2027.
