O2 Discontinues MMS Service as of July 1, 2026

Telefónica Deutschland, operator of the O2 brand, has officially announced that the Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) will be discontinued as of July 1, 2026. Customers will only be able to use the service until June 30, 2026. This decision follows the trend of other major providers who have previously taken similar measures.

Vodafone had already shut down its MMS service in 2023. Deutsche Telekom and 1&1 have also discontinued their MMS offerings. This marks the final end of a service that has been available in Germany since 2002. Telefónica describes MMS as a pioneer of mobile image communication that is now retiring. The service allowed mobile users to send not only text messages but also images, audio files, and short videos.

The introduction of MMS was a significant step in the development of mobile communication. MMS was launched by O2 in November 2002 and quickly became a popular means of communication. Users could send vacation photos, birthday greetings, and spontaneous snapshots. Innovative offerings such as “MMS to Postcard” and “MMS to Sticker” expanded the usage possibilities and made MMS a testing ground for new mobile services. However, with the increasing prevalence of smartphones and social media, MMS has increasingly been viewed as outdated.

Small file sizes and high costs of up to 39 cents per MMS significantly restricted usage. These factors contributed to the definitive phase-out of MMS in 2026. The successor to MMS, Rich Communication Services (RCS), offers significantly enhanced features. Users can send not only texts and images but also videos, documents, and voice messages. RCS also enables video calls and the sending of messages with formatted text, greatly improving communication.

RCS is already integrated into the Google Messages app on Android devices and the iMessage app on iPhones. Users benefit from using their mobile data without incurring additional charges for sending messages. This development shows that mobile communication is continuously evolving and adapting to user needs. The discontinuation of the MMS service marks the end of an era in mobile history. MMS was an important step in the evolution of mobile communication that paved the way for modern messaging services.

As of July 1, 2026, the service will no longer be available on the network. Telefónica Deutschland has described the decision to discontinue the MMS service as a necessary step in the changing communication landscape. The focus is now on promoting RCS and other modern communication solutions.
