iOS 26 on Android: Developer Transforms Surface Duo
A developer named SmuOS has installed iOS 26 on an Android smartphone, transforming it into an iPhone Duo. The attempt was carried out on the Microsoft Surface Duo, a device with a foldable screen. SmuOS shared his results on the platform X and published footage that verifies the authenticity of his work. The porting of iOS 26 to the Surface Duo is not an emulation. Instead, the developer utilizes Apple's open-source XNU kernel along with a customized UEFI loader.
According to Windows Latest, the setup displays iOS 26.5.2, with the model name "iPhone 17 Pro Max" and 5 GB of storage. Although the layout of iOS 26 cannot be optimally transferred to the Surface Duo, the attempt is considered successful. SmuOS explained that his Surface Duo is a test device that already shows some display damage. The entire process leading up to the appearance of the iOS setup screen took several hours. Both displays of the Surface Duo run at 37 FPS, and the touch controls function without limitations.
Significant effort was required to adapt the XNU kernel for the Qualcomm processor of the Android device, as iPhones use ARM-based chips. Additionally, there are specific security features that are not compatible with Android chips. For the porting, SmuOS also used UniXNU, an open-source project that allows iOS and macOS to run on non-Apple ARM64 hardware via UEFI. This combination of technologies highlights the complexity of the project and the challenges encountered in adapting to the hardware. The developer invested a total of two months into the project to present a functional Android device running iOS 26.
Initially, SmuOS only wanted to keep his Surface Duo alive, as the device has not received any software updates since September 2023. In the future, SmuOS plans to use the Surface Pen as an Apple Pencil and to get an iOS 27 build running on his "iPhone Duo." These ambitions demonstrate that the developer remains interested in improving and expanding his porting efforts. The installation of iOS on an Android device raises questions about interoperability and the possibilities of software porting. Such projects could also be of interest to other developers looking to tackle similar challenges.
The authenticity of the porting has been supported by footage and confirmation from Windows Latest. SmuOS has documented his findings and progress on the platform X, further fueling interest in such experiments. The porting of iOS 26 to the Surface Duo could be seen as an example of innovation in software development. With his project, SmuOS has not only overcome technical hurdles but also redefined the boundaries between different operating systems. "Hello from Surface DuiOS 26," SmuOS wrote in one of his posts, highlighting the developer's humorous approach to his project. The community shows keen interest in the progress and the possibilities arising from this type of software development.
