New Google Play System Update for Android Users

Google rolled out a new Google Play System update on July 6, 2026, providing Android users with new features on a monthly basis. These changes focus on data backup and allow for improved control over personal data. The updates are independent of the device manufacturer and aim to enhance user experience. One of the most significant new features is the ability to directly manage the backup of SMS, MMS, and RCS messages.

Users can activate a new toggle switch via the settings under Accounts and Backup > Google Backup > More Device Data. This feature is similar to the existing backup setting for selected apps and gives users more control over their data. The introduction of this feature is particularly relevant as Google has recently stopped offering free backups for Android devices. Each backup now counts against the available storage quota, which is limited to 15 GB in the free version. Users must therefore carefully consider which data they wish to back up to avoid exceeding their storage limit.

Additionally, the update introduces local backup for documents. Users can automatically save their downloaded documents to Google Drive, enabling secure access to documents from various devices. A new menu called "Documents" will be added to the "Backup" page, appearing alongside "Photos & Videos" and "Other Device Data." Supported file formats include .DOC, .PPT, .XLS, .PDF, and all other documents stored on the device. Google has announced that the transfer of these documents between the device and Google services will be encrypted. However, changes made to a document will not automatically sync with other devices.

The update also brings a revamp of in-app purchases. An improved, native storefront for Google One aims to optimize the user experience. These changes are designed to simplify interaction with Google services and enhance usability. Another highlight is the ability to transfer work profiles to Wear OS smartwatches. This feature facilitates the use of work applications on smartwatches and improves integration between devices.

Users can thus access their work data more efficiently. Additionally, a new Google location sharing feature for Chromebooks is being introduced. This function allows users to share their location more easily with others, which is particularly beneficial for using Google services. The location sharing will be integrated into the settings of Chromebooks. Developers of Google and third-party apps will also receive new features that enhance support for processes related to Google Maps.

These innovations are intended to facilitate application development and promote the integration of mapping features into apps. Android users can check the currently installed version of the Google Play System Updates via the settings under Security and Privacy > Updates > Google Play System Update. The update is being rolled out gradually, so not all users will have access to the new features at the same time. The new features of the Google Play System update are part of Google's ongoing effort to improve the user experience on Android devices. The changes aim to give users more control over their data and simplify the use of Google services. The update has been distributed to Android users since July 6, 2026.
