Cybersecurity Assessment 2026: Gap Between Awareness and Resilience
A recent survey of 1,200 IT and cybersecurity professionals has shown that while organizations have developed a high awareness of cyber risks, they struggle to translate this awareness into operational resilience. The 2026 Bitdefender Cybersecurity Assessment highlights this discrepancy and indicates that the challenges in implementation are greater than ever before. The survey found that 78% of respondents reported their organizations are aware of cyber risks. However, only 45% reported having effective risk mitigation strategies in place. This gap between awareness and action is alarming and raises questions about the effectiveness of current security measures.
Another notable finding from the survey is that 62% of respondents indicated their companies experienced a cyberattack in the past 12 months. Despite these experiences, many organizations struggle to improve their security protocols. 53% of respondents stated that their security budgets are insufficient to take necessary actions. The study also shows that 47% of companies do not conduct regular cybersecurity training for employees. This is particularly concerning, as human error is often identified as one of the main reasons for successful cyberattacks.
The lack of training could thus represent a significant vulnerability. Another aspect of the survey is technology adoption. 69% of respondents believe that new technologies such as artificial intelligence and machine learning can enhance cybersecurity. Nevertheless, only 34% of companies have already implemented these technologies.
This indicates a discrepancy between the potential of new technologies and their actual usage. The survey also highlights that 58% of companies have difficulty finding qualified cybersecurity professionals. This challenge could significantly impair organizations' ability to defend against cyber threats. Recruiting and retaining talent remains a central issue in the industry.
To increase resilience, experts recommend that companies regularly review and adjust their security strategies. 71% of respondents believe that a proactive security culture is crucial for minimizing cyber risks. Implementing best practices and fostering cybersecurity awareness within the organization are essential steps in this process. Another important point is the need to invest in modern security solutions. 64% of respondents indicated that they plan to upgrade their security solutions in the next 12 months.
These investments could be critical in improving the security posture of companies and thwarting future attacks. The survey also shows that 59% of companies are considering collaboration with external security providers to strengthen their security measures. These partnerships could facilitate access to expertise and resources necessary for enhancing cybersecurity. The results of the 2026 Bitdefender Cybersecurity Assessment underscore the need to close the gap between awareness and resilience. Companies must take proactive measures to improve their security strategies and better prepare against cyber threats. The survey results were published on July 1, 2026.
