Windows 11 Receives Major Update in September 2026

On September 14, 2026, Microsoft released a comprehensive update for Windows 11, which not only addresses a record number of security vulnerabilities but also introduces numerous new features. The IT news site Windowslatest has already tested the innovations for versions 25H2 and 24H2. The new features will be rolled out gradually, so most users will gain access in the coming days or weeks. One of the most significant changes is the ability to move the taskbar to any edge of the screen.

This feature has been a frequently requested wish from users since the introduction of Windows 11 in 2021. The new setting can be found under Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Taskbar behaviors > Taskbar position, where options for "Left", "Top", "Right", and "Bottom" are available. Additionally, there is an option for a smaller taskbar that reduces both the icons and the height of the bar. However, Windowslatest has pointed out that the search box and the smaller version of the taskbar currently only function when the taskbar is positioned at the top or bottom. When positioned on the side, these elements are hidden until Microsoft expands support.

The Start menu also receives new size options: "Small", "Automatic", and "Large". Furthermore, there are separate buttons for "Pinned", "Recently used", and "All". These changes allow users to better control the Start menu and prevent it from covering the entire screen. Another update concerns Windows Search, which now operates faster, as results from Bing and the Microsoft Store can be hidden when these features are disabled. This is intended to enhance the user experience and make searches more efficient.

Microsoft is also introducing a new administrator protection feature that will be implemented gradually. This measure aims to further enhance the security of Windows 11. Additionally, device provisioning with Windows Autopilot will be improved to optimize device management in enterprise environments. A technical detail of the update is the introduction of process isolation for Microsoft Execution Containers, designed for agent-based and programming tasks. This measure is intended to increase the security and stability of applications running in these containers.

Another important point is the complete removal of the WMIC tool from versions 24H2 and 25H2. This tool has been part of Windows for 25 years, and the decision to remove it is part of Microsoft's strategy to modernize and simplify the user interface. Additionally, minor fixes have been made to Outlook search and touchpad reliability. These improvements aim to optimize the overall user experience and enhance software functionality. Microsoft plans to roll out the update to all users by the end of September 2026.
