Telekom Transitions 1.3 Million Telephone Connections

Deutsche Telekom has announced the transition of 1.3 million traditional telephone connections in Germany to a new mobile technology. This measure primarily affects customers who have relied on conventional landline connections. The transition is part of a comprehensive modernization program that has been underway for some time. A new telephone box named "Call Connect via Funk" will be introduced for this transition. This box allows users to continue using their existing landline number while the connection is established via the mobile network.

Telekom emphasizes that the installation of the telephone box is simple and straightforward, typically completed within 15 minutes. The telephone box is plugged into a power outlet and replaces the existing telephone line with a mobile connection (4G/LTE). Users can continue to use their existing landline phone as long as it is not an outdated rotary dial phone. The setup does not require a SIM card, making the process easier for many customers. The cost for the telephone box is €3.95 per month or a one-time payment of €99.99.

These fees only cover the hardware. Additionally, customers will need to pay for the connection between the telephone box and their landline phone, which will be regulated by two new tariffs. The new tariffs "Call Basic via Funk" and "Call Comfort via Funk" offer different options for telephony. "Call Basic via Funk" includes 120 free minutes and costs €22.95 per month, while "Call Comfort via Funk" offers a flat rate to the German landline for €32.45 per month. These tariffs are specifically designed for customers who do not require internet usage.

Telekom has previously transitioned older telephone connections to modern technologies. However, many customers wish to retain a traditional telephone connection as they do not want DSL or fiber optic connections. The new telephone box is specifically aimed at this user group. From an economic perspective, it may make sense for many customers to switch to a modern DSL or fiber optic connection that also provides internet access. Nevertheless, there is a significant number of people who simply want to make phone calls and therefore prefer Telekom's new solution.

However, the transition to mobile technology requires reliable mobile reception in the affected homes. This could pose a challenge in rural areas or in buildings with thick walls. Telekom recommends checking the reception quality before the transition. The transition to the "Call Connect via Funk" telephone box is expected to occur gradually over the coming months. Telekom has already begun notifying affected customers and plans to complete the transition by the end of 2026. "We want to provide our customers with a simple and cost-effective solution to continue making phone calls in the future," stated a Telekom spokesperson. The transition to the new technology is part of the strategy to modernize the communication infrastructure in Germany.
