New Google Play System Update for Android Users
On July 6, 2026, Google rolled out a new Google Play System update that provides Android users with monthly new features. These changes affect data backup and message management, which are significant for many users. The new options allow for direct control over the backup of SMS, MMS, and RCS messages. Through the settings, users can now enable a new toggle for SMS and MMS messages as well as call history under Accounts and Backup > Google Backup > More Device Data.
This feature gives users more control over which data is stored in Google Cloud. This is particularly relevant as Google has recently stopped offering free backups for Android devices. The available storage quota for free Google Cloud users is 15 GB. Each backup now counts directly against this quota. Users must therefore carefully consider which data they want to back up to avoid quickly reaching their storage limits.
Additionally, the update introduces local backup for documents. This feature allows downloaded documents to be automatically saved to Google Drive. Users can thus ensure that their documents are accessible from any device. A new menu called "Documents" will be added to the "Backup" page, appearing alongside "Photos & Videos" and "Other Device Data." Supported file formats for local backup include .DOC, .PPT, .XLS, .PDF, and all other documents stored on the device. Google has announced that the transfer of these documents between the device and Google services will be encrypted. However, changes made to a document will not automatically sync with other devices.
The update also brings a number of other minor enhancements. This includes a revamp of in-app purchases through an improved, native storefront for Google One. These changes aim to enhance the user experience when purchasing subscriptions and additional storage. Another highlight is the ability to transfer work profiles to Wear OS smartwatches. This feature facilitates the use of work applications directly on the wrist and improves integration between smartphone and smartwatch.
Users can thus access their work data more efficiently. Additionally, a new Google location sharing feature for Chromebooks is being introduced. This function allows users to share their location more easily with others, which is particularly beneficial for using map and navigation services. Location sharing can be activated through the Chromebook's settings. For developers of Google and third-party apps, there are also new features that enhance support for processes in their apps related to Google Maps.
These innovations are intended to facilitate the integration of mapping and location services into applications and improve user-friendliness. Users can check the currently installed version of the Google Play System Updates and update to a new version if necessary by navigating to Security and Privacy > Updates > Google Play System Update. The update is being rolled out gradually to all Android users. The new features of the Google Play System Update are part of Google's strategy to continuously improve the user experience on Android devices and give users more control over their data. The update has been rolling out since July 6, 2026.
