Windows 11 Update Brings New Features Back

On August 29, 2026, Microsoft released the optional preview update KB5120998 for Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2. This update brings numerous detail improvements as well as some significant changes aimed at enhancing the user experience in daily use. The information comes from Microsoft's official documentation. One of the most noticeable new features is the ability to reposition the taskbar freely.

Users can now choose whether the taskbar is displayed at the bottom, top, left, or right edge of the screen. This feature was available in earlier versions of Windows but has not been offered since the launch of Windows 11. The setting can be found under Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Taskbar behaviors > Taskbar position. Additionally, Microsoft is introducing a smaller variant of the taskbar. In 'Small' mode, the icons and height of the bar are reduced, which is particularly beneficial on smaller screens.

However, this compact display currently only works at the top or bottom edge of the screen. The Start menu also receives new customization options. Users can choose between a small and a large display or use the automatic size. The previous 'Recommended' section is renamed to 'Recently Used'. Furthermore, users can hide their name and profile picture in the Start menu, providing more customization freedom.

Separate toggles allow users to independently show or hide the sections for pinned apps, recommended content, and all apps. These new options are expected to significantly improve the usability of the Start menu. Windows Search is also being revamped. The search interface will be made clearer and will more distinctly indicate whether a result comes from an app, settings, a local file, the web, or the Microsoft Store. Users have the option to disable web and store results in the privacy and search settings if they do not wish to see them.

Another feature is the automatic indexing of frequently used folders for later searches. This is intended to increase efficiency when using Windows Search. The File Explorer is also being optimized to respond more quickly to requests. The section with recommended files now also supports touch scrolling, making it easier to operate on touchscreen devices. With the update, Microsoft introduces the Administrator Protection feature, which aims to better secure administrative rights.

This feature allows administrative tasks to be performed through time-limited permissions. By default, this feature is disabled and is particularly aimed at enterprise environments with heightened security requirements. Additionally, Windows is being prepared for the use of AI agents with the update. The new Microsoft Execution Containers (MXC) can isolate processes such as coding agents and control their access to files and networks.

This measure is intended to enhance security and efficiency when using AI applications in Windows 11. Microsoft has noted that update KB5120998 may cause issues. Users should therefore carefully consider whether the new features are worth the risk of installation. The company plans to roll out the update to all users by the end of September 2026.
