Google Reduces Free Online Storage for New Users

Google Reduces Free Online Storage for New Users

Google has changed its storage policies for new users in certain regions. For several weeks now, new account holders receive only 5 gigabytes of free online storage if they do not provide a phone number during registration. Previously, the free storage was set at 15 gigabytes. This change particularly affects users who are signing up for a new Google account. To receive the full 15 gigabytes, they must provide their phone number for verification.

This measure is intended to enhance account security and improve data recovery. Affected users have shared their experiences on social media, particularly on Reddit. Many express dissatisfaction with the new regulation, which is perceived as a restriction of anonymity. Google has not yet responded comprehensively to these concerns. The phone number is used to verify the new account.

After successful verification, the user is no longer considered anonymous and receives the full storage space. Alternatively, users who do not wish to provide their phone number can manage with 5 gigabytes. In response to inquiries from Android Authority, Google provided a brief statement indicating that the new storage policy is currently being tested. The tests are taking place in selected regions, although Google does not specify which countries.

Another detail concerns the wording in a Google support document. The description of the free cloud storage has been changed. Instead of "Your Google Account includes 15 GB of free cloud storage," it now states, "Your Google Account includes up to 15 GB of free cloud storage." According to 9to5google, this change was made in March 2026. The new regulation applies exclusively to new users.

Existing customers are not affected by this change and retain their previous storage space. Google has not disclosed how long the tests of the new policy will last. For users who need more storage and do not wish to provide their phone number, Google offers the option to purchase additional storage through Google One. Prices for additional storage start at 100 gigabytes for €1.99 per month. The changes have not been actively promoted by Google, leading to confusion among users. The first indications of the new regulation were discovered on March 18, 2026.
