Firefox 154.0 Closes 60 Security Vulnerabilities
Mozilla has released the new major version Firefox 154.0, which is available for Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android. This version brings significant improvements, including the ability to stream with Nvidia GeForce NOW. Users can now play videos faster at specific points and have access to new optional app icons. In the security report for Firefox 154, Mozilla lists a total of 58 fixed security vulnerabilities. Of these, 54 were discovered by external security researchers.
The developers classify 17 of these vulnerabilities as high risk, while 30 are classified as medium risk and the rest as low risk. The last four entries in the security report, which carry the CVE numbers CVE-2026-74987 to CVE-2026-74990, include an unspecified number of internally found security vulnerabilities. These primarily result from programming errors in memory management and are mostly classified as high risk. For Windows users, Firefox 154 offers the ability to stream with Nvidia GeForce NOW, reducing the need for expensive hardware. This feature is currently available only for Windows users.
Additionally, users can now select an alternative app icon for Firefox, which was already possible on Android and iOS. The selection includes icons from 2004 and 2017, a rainbow icon in a "Pride" style, as well as various bonus icons. In several European countries, including Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, and the Netherlands, users can now permanently set Startpage as their search engine. The integrated PDF viewer and editor can now also be set as the default application for PDF files on macOS, which was previously only possible on Windows. The new version also improves the translation feature for web pages.
Firefox now performs its own speech recognition, which also translates content from iFrames. This represents a significant improvement over the previous method, which relied on website specifications. Another update concerns cookie management. When users add websites to the exception list for cookie deletion, these will no longer be automatically excluded from tracking protection. This could further enhance user privacy.
The free VPN introduced with Firefox 149 continues to offer an expanded selection of virtual locations in 28 countries, but only until the end of August 2026. The VPN is currently available for users in the USA, Canada, the UK, France, and Germany, and is being gradually rolled out for Firefox on Android. An iOS version is expected to follow soon. In addition to Firefox 154.0, the ESR versions 153.1.0, 140.14.0, and 115.39.0 have also been released.
The latter is, however, only available for Windows 7 and 8.1 as well as macOS 10.12 to 10.14 and will only be supported until an unspecified date. Mozilla has classified the vulnerabilities in Firefox 154.0 as critical to ensure user safety. The new version was released on August 19, 2026.
