Vodafone Continues Reallocation of TV Channels
Vodafone has announced that the reallocation of various TV and radio channels will continue in May 2026. This measure affects millions of households in Germany and is part of a comprehensive modernization of frequencies that has been underway since 2025. The goal is to ensure uniform frequency usage and improve network performance. The transition includes the shutdown of some channels in SD quality, which will gradually be replaced by HD channels. For example, in January 2026, the television channel Das Erste was switched to HD.
Vodafone plans to adjust more than eight million connections in over 400 cities by mid-year. Affected households will be informed of the upcoming changes by post or email. On Vodafone's official help page, users can check if they are affected by the transition. There, they will also find the new channel list, which will be provided through automatic channel sorting. It is important that users' devices are not disconnected from power on the night of the transition.
Otherwise, various presets may be lost. The day after the transition, many users will need to initiate a channel scan through their TV settings to receive the new channels. If the picture remains black or if there are picture and sound errors after the transition, it may be necessary to reset the device to factory settings. In such cases, contacting support is recommended. Users who receive their TV programming through a GigaTV Box will not need to make any changes, as the device will automatically adopt the new channel list.
The transition is considered necessary to enhance network performance and enable higher data transmission rates. The new automatic channel sorting is also intended to eliminate the need for manual sorting of TV channels. However, users may need to get accustomed to the new sorting, as it may differ significantly from the previous one. To receive HD channels, it is required to have a corresponding receiver or a CI+ module from the provider. Vodafone has emphasized that the frequency modernization measures will improve the quality of TV reception in the long term.
This transition is part of a larger trend in the media landscape responding to the increasing demand for high-definition television. The switch to HD channels is perceived positively by many users, as it promises better picture and sound quality. Vodafone has previously conducted similar transitions and reports a smooth process. The current measures are another step in the continuous improvement of the company's infrastructure. The next phase of the transition is expected to take place on the night of May 15 to 16, 2026, when further channels will be reallocated.
