Telekom Transitions 1.3 Million Telephone Connections

Deutsche Telekom has announced that it will transition 1.3 million traditional telephone connections in Germany. This measure affects customers who have relied on conventional landline connections. The transition is part of a gradual shift towards more modern technology, which has been a focus of the company for some time. A new telephone box named "Call Connect via Funk" will be provided for the affected customers. This box enables telephony over the mobile network while retaining the existing landline numbers.

Customers can generally continue to use their existing landline phones, which facilitates the transition. The switch to the telephone box requires reliable mobile reception in the affected residence. Telekom has emphasized that not all users of a traditional telephone connection are interested in a DSL or fiber optic connection. Many customers simply want to make phone calls, which justifies the introduction of the telephone box. The installation of the new telephone box is straightforward.

The device is plugged into a power outlet, and the connection is made via the mobile network (4G / LTE). A SIM card is not required, and the phone is connected as usual to the middle TAE socket. The setup occurs automatically and is typically completed within 15 minutes. Telekom charges a monthly fee of €3.95 for the use of the telephone box or a one-time payment of €99.99 for the hardware. Additionally, there are costs for the connection between the telephone box and the landline phone.

For this purpose, Telekom offers two new tariffs: Call Basic via Funk with 120 free minutes for €22.95 per month and Call Comfort via Funk with a flat rate to the German landline for €32.45 per month. The transition to the telephone box may be less economically attractive than switching to a modern DSL or fiber optic connection that also provides internet access. Nevertheless, there is a target group interested in the new solution, particularly older individuals or those unfamiliar with modern technology. Telekom has previously transitioned older telephone connections to modern technology. This transition is part of a broader strategy aimed at modernizing infrastructure in Germany.

The introduction of the telephone box is another step in this process to meet the needs of a broader customer base. Telekom has emphasized that the transition to the telephone box represents a viable solution for customers who do not require comprehensive internet services. The simple installation and retention of existing phone numbers are key advantages for users. The transition is expected to occur gradually over the coming months. Deutsche Telekom plans to complete the transition to the new technology by the end of 2026. Customers affected by the transition will be informed in a timely manner and will receive support for the installation of the new telephone box.
