Microsoft Improves File Size Display in File Explorer

Microsoft has announced that the File Explorer of Windows 11 will feature an improved display of file sizes. This update aims to enhance the readability of file sizes by displaying larger files in megabytes or gigabytes, while smaller files will remain indicated in kilobytes. This change is expected to significantly improve the user-friendliness of file management. Additionally, two important options are returning to the right-click menu of the File Explorer.

The "Refresh" and "Print" functions, which were removed in a previous revision of the context menu, will now be re-integrated. The well-known Windows leaker PhantomOfEarth reported on X/Twitter that the "Refresh" option is available in the current test version of Windows 11. The integration of the "Refresh" option will occur not only in the File Explorer but also in all modern context menus of Windows 11. Previously, this function was only accessible in the desktop menu. The experimental build 26300.8376 includes these updates and is currently being tested.

The "Print" option will also be available in the right-click menu of the File Explorer. Previously, this function was only visible in the old menu, making it difficult to use. With the new implementation, users can print files directly from the context menu, significantly speeding up the workflow. Microsoft also plans to simplify and expedite the right-click menu in a future version. These measures aim to further enhance the user experience and increase efficiency when using the File Explorer.

The changes in the File Explorer are part of a series of updates that Microsoft is planning for Windows 11. The new features are expected to be available to all users in the coming weeks. According to reports from Windowslatest, Microsoft has already announced that the new features will be rolled out soon. The improved display of file sizes will be particularly significant for users dealing with large files. Previously, for example, 8 gigabytes were displayed as 8,388,608 kilobytes, which severely impacted clarity.

With the new display in megabytes or gigabytes, handling will be much simpler. The test version 26300.8376 is an important step in the evolution of Windows 11. Microsoft aims to continuously improve the user interface and functionality of the operating system to meet user demands. The return of popular menu items and the improved readability of file sizes are part of this strategy.

The new features are a direct result of user feedback that Microsoft incorporates into development. Feedback regarding the user-friendliness of the File Explorer has significantly contributed to the decision to implement these changes. The release of the new features is eagerly anticipated by many users. Microsoft is committed to optimizing the user experience in Windows 11 and plans to roll out the updates to all users by the end of May 2026.
