LG Responds to Allegations of Eavesdropping with Smart TVs

LG Electronics has addressed allegations that its Smart TVs could be eavesdropping on user conversations, even when the devices are turned off. These accusations were triggered by a video from the YouTube channel GamersNexus and a blog post from Malwarebytes, claiming that the TVs violate user privacy while in standby mode. In a statement to PC Welt, LG explained that voice-to-text processing only begins when users activate the voice control. This occurs either through a supported activation word or by pressing the corresponding button on the remote control. Audio data for activation word recognition is processed locally on the device and is not continuously recorded or transmitted.

LG emphasized that no conversations are recorded outside of an active voice recognition session. The processing of voice commands only results in the creation of speech recognition results and technical log data that pertain solely to these interactions. The company pointed out that features such as Automatic Content Recognition (ACR) and voice recognition are optional and not enabled by default. Users have the option to activate or deactivate these features through the TV settings. The ACR technology uses audio fingerprinting to identify content, with this processing occurring via the TV's internal audio processor.

LG clarified that no screenshots, screen recordings, or voice recordings are captured in this process. Information generated through ACR can be used to analyze viewer trends, but only if the feature is activated. The allegations from GamersNexus and Malwarebytes have raised public concern. Users are worried about privacy and the security of their personal data. However, LG has emphasized that user privacy is respected and that the technology is not used for purposes other than those stated.
