FritzOS 8.50: New Ad Blocker and Additional Features
FritzOS 8.50, the upcoming update for the Fritzbox operating interface, will include an integrated ad blocker that also protects against malware. The ad blocker operates with filter lists and blocks advertisements throughout the home network, both via WLAN and LAN. This means that not only PCs and laptops but also smartphones and tablets can benefit from this feature. Users have the option to create their own filter lists or use publicly available DNS filter lists. The individual setup can be done through the user interface at fritz.box under the menu item Home Network > Network > Network Settings > Change Advanced Network Settings > DNS Filter.
This feature is intended not only to enable ad-free browsing but also to enhance internet security. In addition to the ad blocker, FritzOS 8.50 will have the capability to automatically prioritize certain connections. The Fritzbox will be able to recognize ongoing video conferences and maintain stable traffic for them. This feature aims to improve the quality of online meetings and minimize interruptions. Another new feature is Smart Check, which allows users of the MyFritzApp to check the current status of their home network.
The home screen will display information about internet connection, telephony, smart home, and connected devices. In case of issues, Smart Check will also provide possible solutions. FritzOS 8.50 will also enhance the failover protection of the Fritzbox. Models with 4G or 5G can utilize the new Fritz Failsafe to maintain a stable internet connection even during outages. This feature is expected to increase the reliability of the internet connection in critical situations.
For FritzFon devices, the update introduces a simplified mode. In this mode, the context keys can be used as speed dial buttons, with each key assigned to a phone number or function. Users also have the option to store up to four emergency contacts that will be automatically dialed in case of an emergency. A specific release timeframe for FritzOS 8.50 has not yet been established. However, it is expected that the first Fritzbox models will receive the update later this year.
Users who wish to test some of the new features in advance can download the latest lab version of FritzOS, which is still in the beta phase and may contain bugs. The introduction of the ad blocker and new features could significantly enhance the user experience and increase security in the home network. According to the official description, the ad blocker will filter not only advertisements but also trackers and malware. The lab version of FritzOS 8.50 is already available, but it is recommended to use it with caution as it is not final and may contain errors.
