European Mobile Operators Embrace Satellite Communication

European mobile operators are increasingly focusing on satellite communication to improve mobile coverage in rural and hard-to-reach areas. This development comes against the backdrop that, despite significant investments in terrestrial networks in Germany and other European countries, many regions still remain underserved. In recent years, mobile operators have invested billions in expanding their networks. According to the Federal Association of German Telecommunications (BDT), investments in 2025 are expected to exceed 10 billion euros. Nevertheless, there are still areas where network coverage does not meet user demands.

To close these gaps, network operators are turning to satellite technology. Companies like OneWeb and SES have already announced plans to provide mobile services via satellites. These technologies enable stable internet connections even in remote regions without the need for extensive terrestrial infrastructure. However, Starlink, the satellite internet project by SpaceX, remains largely excluded from this context. While Starlink is already active in many countries, European providers have expressed concerns about integrating this technology into their existing networks.

In particular, high costs and regulatory challenges pose hurdles. The European Commission has recognized the importance of satellite communication and is promoting relevant initiatives. As part of the Digital Compass 2030 plan, there is an aim to create a comprehensive digital infrastructure in the EU by 2030, which also includes satellite communication. This could strengthen the competitiveness of European providers in the global market. Another aspect is the collaboration between mobile operators and satellite providers.

Some network operators have already formed partnerships with companies like Inmarsat and Iridium to expand their services. These collaborations allow for the combination of the advantages of both technologies and ensure better coverage. However, the challenges in implementing satellite communication should not be underestimated. Latency times in satellite connections are generally higher than in terrestrial networks, which can be problematic for applications such as online gaming or video streaming. Network operators are working on solutions to minimize these issues and improve the user experience.

Some providers are already testing hybrid models that combine both terrestrial and satellite-based technologies. These approaches could represent a promising solution to the challenges of mobile coverage. Initial pilot projects in rural areas are showing positive results and could serve as a model for future implementations. The development of satellite communication is also being driven by technological advancements. New generations of satellites offer improved capacities and lower latency times.

The next generation of satellites, being developed under the European Space Agency (ESA) program, aims to address these challenges and facilitate integration into existing mobile networks. Mobile operators face the challenge of adapting their strategies to meet the changing demands of the market. Investments in satellite communication could help close the digital divide in Europe in the long term and ensure comprehensive mobile coverage. According to a study by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI), demand for satellite communication services could increase by 30% by 2030. The next steps in the development of satellite communication will be crucial for sustainably transforming the mobile landscape in Europe. The first commercial services could be available as early as 2027 if the current pilot projects are successfully completed.
