WhatsApp Ends Support for Older Android Versions

WhatsApp has announced that it will discontinue support for older Android versions. Starting September 8, 2026, devices running Android 5.0 or Android 5.1 will no longer be supported. This decision was made to ensure that new features and security updates can be provided on current devices. The affected Android versions are now over ten years old.

According to Statcounter, Android 5.0, also known as Lollipop, had a global market share of only 0.69 percent in March 2026. This corresponds to an estimated 3 million users worldwide who still rely on these outdated versions. WhatsApp plans to inform all affected users through a notification in the app. This will be displayed upon opening the application and will indicate that WhatsApp will no longer function on the respective device. The warning will appear in a timely manner before the end of support to give users the opportunity to respond accordingly.

The decision to end support for Android 5.0 and 5.1 is also a response to the security risks associated with using outdated software. Older Android versions no longer receive security updates, making them vulnerable to attacks. Therefore, WhatsApp recommends upgrading to a device with a supported Android version. Currently, WhatsApp only supports devices running Android 6 or higher. The latest Android versions, Android 16 and Android 17, are expected to be released soon, with Android 17 already set to launch in the summer of 2026.

Users who upgrade to a newer version can benefit from improved features and security updates. WhatsApp advises its users to back up their chats before the end of support. This can be done either via Google Drive or locally on the device. The backed-up chats can then be transferred to a new device that uses a supported Android version. Instructions for transferring WhatsApp to a new phone are available in the app.

WhatsApp's decision to discontinue support for older Android versions is part of a broader strategy aimed at enhancing user experience and ensuring platform security. Users who continue to rely on outdated software risk not only losing access to WhatsApp but also compromising their data security. WhatsApp has previously taken similar measures to end support for older operating systems. This strategy is not unusual in the software industry, where the continuous development of new features and security updates often necessitates the discontinuation of support for older systems. Users are encouraged to stay informed about the latest developments and updates within the app.

WhatsApp's announcement comes at a time when the use of messaging services continues to rise globally. The platform has established itself as one of the leading providers in recent years and is continuously investing in new features to meet the needs of its users. The introduction of a new subscription model called WhatsApp Plus is an example of the company's efforts to explore additional revenue streams. Support for Android 5.0 and 5.1 will end on September 8, 2026, providing users with a clear timeframe to upgrade to newer devices.
