Telekom Transitions 1.3 Million Telephone Connections

Deutsche Telekom has announced that it will transition 1.3 million traditional telephone connections in Germany. This measure affects customers who have relied on conventional landline connections. The transition is part of a comprehensive modernization process that has been underway for some time. The Telekom offers affected customers a new solution called "Call Connect via Funk." The new telephone box allows users to continue using their existing landline number while the connection is established via the mobile network.

The transition to the telephone box does not require the replacement of the existing landline phone, as long as it is not an outdated rotary dial phone. Telekom emphasizes that the installation of the telephone box is simple and straightforward, typically completed within 15 minutes. Customers must pay a monthly fee of €3.95 for the use of the telephone box or make a one-time investment of €99.99 for the hardware. Additionally, there are costs for the connection between the telephone box and the landline phone. Telekom offers two new tariffs for this: Call Basic via Funk with 120 free minutes for €22.95 per month and Call Comfort via Funk, which provides a flat rate to the German landline and costs €32.45.

The transition to mobile technology may not be advantageous for all customers. Some users may prefer a DSL or fiber optic connection that also provides internet access. Nevertheless, the new telephone box is specifically aimed at customers who only wish to make phone calls and do not require additional internet services. This solution could be particularly significant for older individuals or less tech-savvy users. Telekom has previously transitioned older telephone connections to modern technology.

The current step is part of a long-term strategy aimed at modernizing infrastructure and providing customers with contemporary solutions. The transition to mobile technology could also help reduce operational costs for Telekom. The telephone box is plugged into a power outlet and establishes the connection via 4G/LTE. A SIM card is not required, making it easier for users to handle. The setup occurs automatically, and the existing phone number remains fully intact.

This allows customers to continue using their familiar phone number for incoming and outgoing calls. Telekom has emphasized that the transition to the telephone box represents a practical solution for customers who do not wish to deal with modern access technology. The simple installation and retention of the existing phone number are key advantages for affected users. Telekom plans to carry out the transition gradually over the coming months. The transition primarily affects customers in rural areas, where the availability of DSL or fiber optic connections may be limited.
