New Smartphone Accessory Discovers Hidden Cameras

Scientists from South Korea and Singapore have developed an innovative smartphone accessory that can reliably detect hidden cameras. The device, known as SweepLED, aims to provide a cost-effective solution against the increasing surveillance in public spaces and private areas. The prototype was presented in a research report detailing its functionality and test results. SweepLED operates through a sequence of LED illuminations from various angles. The user holds the smartphone steady while the camera captures the changes in reflection caused by the different light sources.

This technology allows for the differentiation of hidden camera lenses from ordinary reflective objects. The detection accuracy of the prototype is approximately 94%, and the scanning duration is less than 5 seconds. The accessory consists of five LED strips that connect to the smartphone via a wireless, magnet-based connection. Using artificial intelligence, the device analyzes the reflections and identifies whether it is a hidden camera. This technology could be particularly significant in countries like South Korea, Japan, and China, where the issue of hidden cameras is widespread.

The development of SweepLED was initiated in response to the growing threat posed by surveillance cameras. One researcher stated that hidden cameras represent a serious threat to personal safety and privacy. These cameras are often installed in hotels, Airbnbs, changing rooms, and public restrooms to secretly record individuals. The problem is so severe that some cities have special police checks aimed at identifying hidden cameras. SweepLED could provide valuable support in these checks by enabling quick and precise detection.

Researchers emphasize that the technology could be of interest not only for private use but also for security authorities. The price for a unit of SweepLED is estimated at 10,000 Korean won, which is approximately 6.30 euros. This cost efficiency could help make the device accessible to a wide audience, provided that the price markup in the open market remains moderate. However, there are currently no concrete sales plans, as the product is still in the prototype stage. The researchers hope that in the coming years, companies will adopt the technology and develop their own devices.

The demand for solutions to combat surveillance is expected to continue rising as more people become concerned about their privacy. The development of SweepLED could thus represent an important step towards enhanced security and data protection. The technology could also find applications in other areas where camera detection is significant, such as security monitoring or the control of public events. The researchers are optimistic that SweepLED will soon be used in various applications to protect people's privacy. The detection of hidden cameras is a growing concern in society, and SweepLED could provide an answer to this challenge.

Researchers have already conducted initial tests in realistic environments that demonstrate the effectiveness of the device. The technology could play a crucial role in the fight against unwanted surveillance in the near future. "We developed SweepLED to give people a sense of security and protect their privacy," stated a member of the research team. "The technology is a step in the right direction to identify and combat hidden cameras."
