Microsoft Enhances Windows 11 Context Menu

Microsoft has announced in a recent post on the official Windows Insider blog that Windows 11 will undergo a comprehensive modernization of the File Explorer. The focus is on numerous improvements that affect both the performance and usability of the File Explorer. In particular, the context menu that appears after a right-click will be revamped to be faster and more user-friendly. The company acknowledges that the context menu has become cluttered and slow over time. In the future, it is expected to respond significantly faster and adapt more to the individual needs of users.

Microsoft has already analyzed and addressed various causes for the previous delays and freezes in the File Explorer to enhance the application's reliability. The improvements are intended to reduce the frequency of issues encountered by users when opening folders, renaming files, or selecting multiple files simultaneously. Microsoft also promises a quicker launch of the File Explorer and overall more reliable responses. However, specific performance metrics were not disclosed. In addition to general optimizations, numerous detail improvements will be included in the update. For instance, file renaming will no longer be interrupted by background synchronizations. Changes to the capitalization of a file name will be displayed immediately, significantly enhancing the user experience.

Microsoft has also made adjustments to frequently used features of the File Explorer. The address bar will now support additional input formats, including paths with quotes or double backslashes. Users can open folders in new tabs by middle-clicking in more locations, facilitating navigation. Another important update concerns the display of file sizes. These will now consistently be shown in units such as KB, MB, or GB, improving clarity.

Additionally, the details pane has been reorganized to make file properties easier to find. The most visible change is the fundamental redesign of the context menu. Microsoft has designed the menu to open faster and appear less cluttered. A new settings page allows users to customize many elements of the menu, including functions like “Print,” “Send to,” or “Create shortcut.”

Users will also have the option to manage extensions from third-party apps. Those who do not need certain program entries in the context menu can hide them in the future. This is expected to be particularly helpful on systems where many applications add their own menu entries. For users who have never adapted to the revised right-click menu of Windows 11, Microsoft offers a return to a more familiar operation. Key commands such as “Cut,” “Copy,” and “Paste” will be prominently placed again to facilitate usage. Microsoft plans to roll out the update to all users by the end of March 2026. The new features and improvements are intended to significantly enhance the user experience in the File Explorer.
