Microsoft Introduces Workplace Check-in in Teams

Microsoft plans to launch the controversial Workplace Check-in feature in Teams in June 2026. This function allows employers to know whether employees are in the office by connecting to the corporate Wi-Fi. The rollout has been postponed multiple times since late 2025, but the start date is now noted in the current roadmap. Workplace Check-in is described as an extension of existing features. Employees can update their work location when they connect to the company's Wi-Fi.

Microsoft emphasizes that this feature is disabled by default, and tenant administrators will decide whether it will be activated. End users have the option to allow or decline the sharing of their location data. In Germany, employee rights are comparatively strong. Companies must obtain the consent of the works council and establish a corresponding works agreement before they can implement such features. This could complicate the introduction of Workplace Check-in in many German companies.

The feature does not provide precise tracking but merely registers when an employee logs into the corporate office Wi-Fi with their computer. In times when many companies are trying to bring employees back from remote work to the office, this feature could be perceived as a surveillance tool. Microsoft is aware of the concerns from data protection advocates and employee representatives and is attempting to address these through various measures. The company has previously emphasized that user privacy will be respected and that the feature will not be activated without consent. The introduction of Workplace Check-in could also impact corporate culture.

Some experts warn that such surveillance mechanisms could undermine trust between employers and employees. The discussion about balancing flexibility and control will gain importance in the coming months. Microsoft Teams has established itself as a central platform for collaboration in many companies over the past few years. The new feature could further increase the use of Teams, especially in companies that are already relying on digital solutions. The integration of Workplace Check-in could also facilitate coordination among colleagues.

The exact functionality and user reactions will only become apparent after the launch in June 2026. Microsoft has announced that further information regarding usage and privacy policies will be provided to clarify for users. The rollout of Workplace Check-in is expected to begin on June 30, 2026, and Microsoft will gradually activate the feature for all users.
