Meta Introduces Paid Subscriptions for Social Media Apps
Meta announced on May 29, 2026, the introduction of paid subscriptions for its social media platforms Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. These new offerings are designed to allow users to unlock additional features beyond the existing free options. Initial information about these subscriptions was released in January 2026, and now the prices and specific features have been disclosed. The subscriptions are divided into three categories: Instagram Plus, Facebook Plus, and WhatsApp Plus.
The prices for these subscriptions are $3.99 per month for Instagram Plus and Facebook Plus, and $2.99 per month for WhatsApp Plus. Naomi Gleit, Product Manager at Meta, confirmed this pricing structure. The first test runs of the subscriptions took place in Spring 2026 to determine which features would be of interest to power users. New features include cosmetic customizations for profiles and chats, as well as enhanced AI features. WhatsApp Plus will offer premium stickers and expanded chat options, among other features.
Instagram Plus will provide more accurate insights into story accesses and additional options for extending the visibility of stories. Currently, not many details are known about Facebook Plus, but it is expected to have similar features to Instagram. An important aspect of the new subscriptions is that the use of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp will remain free. The subscriptions are entirely optional, meaning users are not required to pay for using the platforms. However, the ability to block ads on WhatsApp is not clearly regulated by the subscriptions. Since February 2026, users have been receiving ads in the status area of WhatsApp.
Meta also plans to offer special subscriptions for content creators and businesses under the name “Meta One.” These plans are more expensive than the Plus subscriptions and provide additional features to enhance the reach of posts, as well as access to Meta AI for complex tasks. The prices for the Meta One subscriptions are as follows: Meta One Plus for $7.99 per month, Meta One Essential for $14.99 per month, Meta One Premium for $19.99 per month, and Meta One Advanced for $49.99 per month. The introduction of these subscriptions aims to increase the monetization of the platforms and give users more control over their content and its distribution. Meta has already announced that the subscriptions for content creators and businesses will offer additional options to enhance visibility and interaction with their content.
In addition to the new subscriptions, the existing offering “Meta Verified” will remain available. This option allows users to officially verify their accounts, similar to the blue checkmark on X/Twitter. The focus of Meta Verified is on protection against identity theft and providing additional support, rather than offering new features. The introduction of paid subscriptions could impact Meta's user base, especially if the new features are deemed valuable. The first subscriptions are currently only available for the US market, and it is unclear when or if they will be introduced in other markets, such as Germany.
However, Meta has already indicated that the rollout in additional regions is planned. The new subscriptions are part of a broader strategy by Meta aimed at diversifying revenue from its platforms while simultaneously providing users with more options. The exact impact on user numbers and revenue will only become apparent over time. Meta plans to further expand the first paid subscriptions throughout 2026 and add additional features to meet user needs. The first test runs of the new subscriptions already took place in Spring 2026 to analyze user reactions.
