iOS 26 Ported to Android Smartphone
A developer named SmuOS has successfully installed iOS 26 on an Android smartphone, transforming the device into an iPhone Duo. The porting attempt was carried out on the Microsoft Surface Duo, which features a foldable screen. SmuOS shared his results on the platform X and published footage that verifies the authenticity of his work. The process of installing iOS 26 on the Surface Duo is not an emulation. Instead, the developer utilizes Apple's open-source XNU kernel in combination with a customized UEFI loader.
According to reports from Windows Latest, the setup displays iOS 26.5.2, with the model name "iPhone 17 Pro Max" and 5 GB of storage. Although the layout of iOS 26 could not be optimally transferred to the Surface Duo, the attempt is considered noteworthy. SmuOS stated that his Surface Duo is a test device that already shows some display damage. The entire installation process took several hours before the smartphone displayed the iOS setup screen. Both displays of the Surface Duo operate at a refresh rate of 37 FPS, and the touch controls function without limitations.
Adapting the XNU kernel for the Qualcomm processor of the Android device required a significant amount of work, as iPhones are equipped with specially designed ARM-based chips. Additionally, SmuOS used UniXNU, an open-source project that enables the execution of iOS and macOS on non-Apple ARM64 hardware via UEFI. These adaptations are necessary to integrate the specific security features of iOS that are not compatible with Android chips. The entire porting process took two months and was a personal project for SmuOS to keep his Surface Duo alive. The device has not received software updates since September 2023, motivating the developer to find this solution.
Looking ahead, SmuOS plans to use the Surface Pen as an Apple Pencil and develop an iOS 27 build for his "iPhone Duo." These developments could further enhance the user experience of the Surface Duo and open new possibilities for integrating iOS on Android devices. Installing iOS 26 on an Android device presents a technical challenge that demonstrates how flexible and adaptable software can be. With his project, SmuOS has not only conducted an interesting experiment but also redefined the boundaries of operating systems. The porting of iOS to the Surface Duo could also inspire other developers to start similar projects.
Such initiatives could lead to broader acceptance of cross-platform solutions that promote interoperability between different operating systems in the future. "Hello from Surface DuiOS 26," SmuOS wrote in a humorous post documenting the setup process. This statement highlights the playful approach of the developer in executing his project. The technical details of the porting and the challenges encountered could be of great interest to the developer community. With his project, SmuOS has not only created a functioning system but also gained valuable insights into the adaptation of operating systems.
