Goodyear Develops Tires for Lunar Vehicle Pegasus

Goodyear has been awarded the contract to develop specialized tires for the new lunar vehicle Pegasus. This vehicle is being designed by Lunar Outpost as part of NASA's Artemis program. Pegasus is intended to be used in future manned missions to the Moon's South Pole. The tires are engineered to withstand extreme temperature fluctuations, rocky terrain, and the Moon's low gravity. Chris Helsel, Senior Vice President and Chief Technical Officer at Goodyear, emphasizes that the tires already left their first marks on the Moon during the Apollo program.

The technology has since been further developed to meet the demands of the most extreme environments. The lunar vehicle Pegasus is being developed in collaboration with General Motors, Goodyear, and Leidos. This partnership aims to find innovative solutions to the challenges of the lunar surface. The development of the tires is a crucial step in ensuring mobility on the Moon. The tire design includes materials and designs specifically optimized for the harsh conditions on the Moon.

These include, among other things, high resistance to abrasion and improved traction on uneven terrain. These features are essential to ensure the safety and efficiency of the missions. The Pegasus vehicle is expected to be operational by 2028. Initial tests of the tires are set to take place in the coming years to ensure they can withstand the extreme conditions on the Moon. NASA plans to establish a sustainable presence on the Moon through the Artemis program.

The development of tires for the lunar vehicle is part of a larger trend in the space industry aimed at the exploration of extraterrestrial resources. Companies and organizations worldwide are investing in technologies that enable the exploration and utilization of the Moon and other celestial bodies. Goodyear is positioning itself as a leader in developing solutions for space travel with this project. The challenges associated with designing tires for the Moon are manifold. In addition to the extreme temperatures ranging from -173 °C at night to 127 °C during the day, the tires must also withstand varying gravitational conditions.

These factors require comprehensive research and development to ensure the safety of astronauts. The collaboration between Goodyear and the other partners in the Artemis program is seen as crucial for the success of the missions. Goodyear's expertise in tire development will help improve mobility on the lunar surface. NASA views these technologies as an important step toward achieving its long-term goals. The first manned missions to the Moon are planned for the coming years, with Pegasus playing a central role.

NASA has already announced that the first astronauts are expected to return to the Moon as part of the Artemis program in 2025. The development of the tires is an essential component of these missions. "Our tires already left their first marks on the Moon during the Apollo program. Since then, we have further developed the technology for the most extreme environments," says Chris Helsel.
