Gen Z and Networking: Challenges in the Workplace

Young employees of Generation Z face challenges in building professional networks, even though they acknowledge the value of such connections for their careers. This challenge is particularly evident during initial contact, which is often perceived as uncomfortable. A survey of 1,000 young professionals revealed that 67% of respondents feel insecure when it comes to making new connections. One reason for this insecurity could be digital communication, which many Gen Z representatives prefer as their form of interaction. The use of social media and messaging services has significantly changed the way young people communicate.

While these platforms offer an easy way to connect, they often lack the personal touch present in traditional networking situations. The fear of rejection also plays a crucial role. Many young individuals worry that their attempts to connect will not be well received. This fear can lead them to avoid networking opportunities, which can negatively impact their professional development.

According to the survey, 45% of respondents stated that they do not make new connections due to fear of rejection. Another factor is the lack of role models or mentors who could assist young professionals with networking. Many Gen Z representatives report that they do not know how to take the first step or which strategies are effective. 58% of respondents expressed a desire for more support from experienced colleagues to improve their networking skills.

To overcome these challenges, some companies are implementing targeted training programs. These programs aim to help young employees enhance their communication skills and build confidence in networking. One example is a workshop specifically designed for Gen Z representatives that teaches techniques for effective outreach. Additionally, attending networking events tailored to the interests of Generation Z is recommended. Such events provide a relaxed atmosphere where young people can more easily engage in conversation.

73% of respondents indicated that they feel more comfortable at events aimed at their age group. Utilizing online platforms for networking can also be beneficial. Platforms like LinkedIn offer opportunities to connect and exchange ideas with like-minded individuals. However, the challenge lies in transforming these digital contacts into personal relationships. 52% of respondents reported having difficulty making the transition from online to offline connections.

Another approach to improving networking is promoting teamwork within companies. Through collaborative projects and tasks, young employees can naturally build connections and relationships. 65% of respondents believe that teamwork is an effective method for expanding professional networks. The challenges that Gen Z faces in networking are multifaceted and require a shift in mindset from both young professionals and companies. The willingness to explore new paths and develop innovative approaches could be crucial in strengthening this generation's networking skills. A concrete example is the initiative of a large company planning to introduce a mentoring program for young employees in 2027.
