EU Regulation: New Cars Must Have Alcolock Interface

As of July 1, 2026, the EU mandates that the connection for the Alcolock interface must comply with European standards and be certified by an accredited body. However, it is important to note that the Alcolock itself does not necessarily have to be installed in the vehicle. The regulation only requires manufacturers to ensure the technical preparation for future installation. In such cases, a court may order that an Alcolock be activated in the vehicle. The driver must then blow into the device to measure their breath alcohol level. If the level is too high, the vehicle will not start. The new regulation aims to drastically reduce the number of alcohol-related accidents and fatalities in the EU. By 2030, the number of alcohol-related traffic accidents is to be reduced by at least 50 percent.

In the long term, the EU aims to have no alcohol-related traffic deaths by 2050. In addition to Alcolocks, the EU plans further measures to improve road safety. These include speed assistants, lane-keeping assistants, and the introduction of a black box for cars, which came into effect in 2024. These technologies are intended to help minimize the risk of accidents on the roads. The idea of an integrated alcohol control system in vehicles is not new.
