Digital Wallet "d-you" Launches in 2027

Digital Wallet "d-you" Launches in 2027

Digital Minister Karsten Wildberger presented new details about the digital wallet "d-you" on September 9, 2026, which is set to be available in Germany from January 2027. This digital wallet will allow users to securely store and manage their identity cards and other important documents on their smartphones. The launch of "d-you" is part of a comprehensive initiative to digitize administrative services in Germany. The digital wallet will not only include identity cards but also driving licenses, health cards, and other forms of identification.

Users will be able to manage their documents through a secure app equipped with state-of-the-art encryption technologies. Wildberger emphasized that the security of user data is of utmost priority and that the app will be regularly updated to meet the latest security standards. A key feature of "d-you" is the ability to use digital identities for various applications. This includes identification for online services, access to e-government offerings, and age verification processes. Integration with existing systems is intended to be seamless to provide users with easy access.

The development of the digital wallet is being carried out in collaboration with various technology companies and security authorities. Wildberger highlighted that the initiative also aims to help reduce the digital divide in society. In particular, older adults and low-income individuals will be supported through training programs and assistance in using the technology. The launch of "d-you" will be accompanied by a comprehensive information campaign to educate the public about the benefits and usage of the digital wallet. The campaign will take place both online and offline and will target all age groups.

The goal is to strengthen trust in digital solutions and increase acceptance. Another aspect of the initiative is interoperability with other European countries. Wildberger announced that "d-you" will be designed to be usable in other EU states as well. This is intended to facilitate international exchange and the use of services abroad. The technical implementation of the digital wallet will be carried out in compliance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

Users will retain full control over their data and will be able to decide which information they wish to share. The app will offer features for managing permissions and accessing stored data. The first pilot projects for the use of "d-you" are planned for the fourth quarter of 2026. These tests will serve to verify the functionality and user-friendliness of the app. Wildberger emphasized that user feedback will be incorporated into further development to ensure an optimal solution.

The introduction of the digital wallet "d-you" is seen as an important step towards a modern and digital administration in Germany. The federal government plans to continue advancing digitization in the coming years to improve efficiency and access to public services. The app is expected to be available to the general public starting January 1, 2027.
