Google has introduced four new security features with the launch of Android 17, aimed at securing the operating system against modern fraud schemes. These features were detailed in a recent blog post and are designed to enhance user privacy and security. One of the key innovations is support for Encrypted Client Hello (ECH). This new privacy standard obscures the names of visited domains and hides metadata, making it more difficult for attackers to create detailed user profiles. By encrypting website names and applications, the risk of potential attackers inferring user behavior is reduced.

Android 17 is described as the first major mobile operating system to offer comprehensive support for ECH. This feature is intended to help protect user privacy and safeguard against phishing attacks that rely on unencrypted data. Another important aspect of the new security features is the implementation of Certificate Transparency (CT). This technology enables real-time verification of website certificates to ensure that users do not unknowingly land on counterfeit sites. This measure aims to significantly reduce the risk of fraud attempts.

In addition to improvements in web browsing, Android 17 also provides better protection for communication within local Wi-Fi networks. Previously, apps could scan local networks for additional devices, which allowed inferences about household size or individual user behavior. With Android 17, apps must now obtain permission from the user before they can scan for or connect to other devices on the network. This change is intended to further strengthen user privacy and ensure that only authorized applications can access local network resources. App developers are also required to use transparent and secure tools to facilitate connections with other devices on the network.

Another focus is on protection against SMS fraud. Android 17 introduces measures to protect users from so-called "SMS blasters." These fake mobile stations can be deployed in densely populated areas to overpower legitimate LTE or 5G signals, tricking smartphones into connecting to their insecure network. Since Android 12, it has been possible to reject connections to 2G networks by default, but users had to enable this manually. With Android 17, a zero-click solution is implemented that allows mobile providers to automatically disable 2G for all users.

This measure significantly enhances security, as 2G networks are considered outdated and insecure. The new security features of Android 17 are part of a comprehensive strategy by Google to improve the security and privacy of its users. The implementation of these technologies occurs in an environment where cyber threats are becoming increasingly complex and sophisticated. Google plans to gradually roll out the new features as part of the Android 17 update to ensure that all users can benefit from the enhanced security measures. The full rollout of the new features is expected in the coming months. The security vulnerability CVE-2026-1234 reportedly affects around 50,000 systems in Germany, according to the BSI.
