TomTom Struggles with User Data Loss

The navigation specialist TomTom has announced in a recent support document that user data has been lost. Specifically affected are saved locations and favorites in TomTom navigation apps and devices. According to TomTom, some customers have recently lost access to their saved locations (My Places), favorites, and recent destinations. The cause of this incident is a technical issue related to account login and data synchronization. TomTom is currently working on restoring the lost data.

However, the company has warned that not all data may be recoverable. The restoration is expected to focus on saved locations and favorites created before May 1, 2026. These should automatically reappear once the restoration is complete. The problem occurred between May 1 and May 9, 2026, which means that routes, favorites, or saved locations created or modified during this period may not be recoverable. The IT blog Borncity reports that the data loss issue at TomTom has likely existed since May 5, 2026, when saved locations were deleted for all users and adding new locations was no longer possible. On May 10, 2026, however, there were initial positive reports from users who were able to access their data again.

In a TomTom forum, many users report that they regained access to their saved locations after May 10. This suggests that TomTom's recovery efforts are showing initial success. A post in the TomTom forum from May 5 confirms the problems users experienced. One user wrote: "Since today, all saved locations (stars) are gone, and even home and work locations need to be reset." Many other users have shared similar experiences and confirmed the issue. The data stored in the TomTom cloud is affected by this loss. The difficulties in adding new locations and the deletion of saved locations have unsettled users. TomTom is committed to clarifying the situation and restoring the affected data to regain user trust.

The exact number of affected users is currently unknown; however, the reach of TomTom's navigation solutions in Europe and beyond is significant. TomTom has built a large user base in the past that relies on the reliability of its services. Therefore, the current situation could have far-reaching implications for user satisfaction. TomTom has announced that further information on data recovery and progress will be provided in the coming days. Users are encouraged to regularly check official channels for updates.

The company has emphasized that resolving the issues is a top priority and that all efforts will be made to restore the lost information. "Routes, favorites, or saved locations created or modified between May 1, 2026, may not be recoverable," warns TomTom in its support document.
