Microsoft Warns of Delayed Windows Updates

Microsoft has drastically changed its guidelines for installing Windows updates. Users are urged to install updates as quickly as possible to minimize security risks. This recommendation was released ahead of the July 2026 Patch Tuesday and is a response to the increasing threat posed by AI-driven attacks. The new policy states that Windows updates should not be delayed for more than three days. This is particularly relevant as Microsoft has closed a growing number of security vulnerabilities in recent months.

In June 2026, a total of 206 security vulnerabilities were addressed across various software products, underscoring the urgency of the updates. A key factor for the changed recommendation is AI's ability to identify and exploit vulnerabilities more quickly. Tools like Claude Mythos can discover weaknesses in record time, increasing the danger for unprotected systems. Microsoft has also developed its own AI tool called MDASH, which checks the Windows code for suspicious patterns. Jeremy Chapman, Director at Microsoft 365, emphasizes the real danger posed by unprotected systems.

He explains that the total number of fixed security vulnerabilities has increased since April 2026. This shows that the threat landscape is continuously worsening, forcing companies to rethink their update strategies. The previous practice of delaying updates by days or weeks to wait for potential issues with new patches is no longer feasible, according to Microsoft. The rapid development of exploits by attackers responding to newly discovered vulnerabilities necessitates that companies update their systems promptly. The new deadlines for deploying Windows updates require that quality updates be installed within a maximum of two days.

This means that companies and users must adjust their update strategies to meet the new requirements. Microsoft plans to implement these changes immediately.
