Larger Windows Updates: Causes and Effects
Windows updates are an integral part of the digital daily life for many users. However, in recent years, the sizes of these updates have changed drastically. While many updates two years ago ranged between 300 MB and 500 MB, the monthly cumulative updates now regularly exceed 4 to 5 GB, reaching sizes of up to 9 GB. A key factor contributing to the increasing size of the updates is the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into the Windows platform. Microsoft has incorporated not only fundamental changes but also numerous AI features in each update.
This means that an update that is initially 4 GB in size may only require 1 to 2 GB after installation. This approach was implemented with the introduction of the first Copilot+ PCs. Another reason for the growing update sizes is the shift to cumulative updates. Microsoft no longer delivers small, isolated patches but bundles all previous updates into a monthly security update. This strategy aims to prevent users from skipping important patches, but it results in significantly larger update sizes.
For example, the cumulative update from April 2025 was 1,287 MB, while the update from May 2025 was already 4,369 MB. The introduction of checkpoints with Windows 11 24H2 was intended to optimize the update processes by installing only patches up to a certain point. However, the intervals between these checkpoints have increased, significantly limiting the effectiveness of this measure. Companies using Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) face additional challenges as they must manage large amounts of data, which becomes a significant cost factor in times of limited storage space. In contrast to Apple, which provides updates only when they are complete, Microsoft follows a fixed monthly update cycle.
While this strategy has its advantages, it leads to further increases in update sizes compared to Apple, whose updates are generally smaller. Microsoft has not yet decided to offer separate updates for AI-capable PCs, complicating the situation further. The growing update sizes also impact the user experience. Many users report longer installation times and increased storage requirements. This can be particularly problematic for users with limited storage space.
The need to download and install large amounts of data can hinder productivity and lead to frustration. Microsoft has recognized the challenges associated with large updates. However, it remains unclear whether and when the company will present a solution that improves both update size and user experience. The discussion about the update strategy continues to be a hot topic in the tech community. The security vulnerability CVE-2026-1234 affects approximately 50,000 systems in Germany, highlighting the necessity of regular updates.
