Employees Fear for Their Future in the AI Era
A recent survey shows that 40% of employees in Germany and the USA are worried that their skills will no longer be relevant in five years. These fears are primarily attributed to the rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI), which is already having a noticeable impact on the job market. The survey, conducted by a leading market research institute, revealed that many workers feel compelled to expand their skills to remain competitive. 65% of respondents stated that they are actively seeking further training opportunities to secure their professional relevance. Sectors particularly affected include those heavily influenced by automation and AI technologies.
These include areas such as IT, financial services, and manufacturing. In these sectors, an increase in demand for professionals with specific AI skills is expected. The concern for one's professional future is not unfounded. According to a study by the World Economic Forum, it is projected that by 2025, 85 million jobs may be lost due to automation, while simultaneously, 97 million new jobs could emerge that require new skills. To address these challenges, companies are increasingly relying on internal training programs.
58% of the surveyed companies plan to invest in the further training of their employees over the next two years. This often takes the form of online courses and workshops tailored to the specific needs of the industry. The survey also indicates that the fear of job loss due to AI is present not only among the workforce but also among executives. 47% of leaders expressed concerns that their teams do not possess the necessary skills to keep pace with technological changes. The relevance of lifelong learning is becoming increasingly clear in this context.
Educational institutions are responding to these developments by adjusting their curricula and offering new programs aimed at the demands of the digital age. 30% of universities have already introduced specialized degree programs in AI and data analysis. Another aspect of the survey relates to the role of employers. 72% of respondents expect their employers to provide support for professional development. This includes both financial assistance and the provision of time for training during working hours.
The survey results highlight the necessity of proactively engaging with the changes in the job market. Employees are called upon to continuously update their skills to meet market demands. By 2028, a 40% increase in demand for professionals in the field of AI is projected. The survey was conducted in April 2026 among 1,000 employees in Germany and the USA.
