Vodafone Continues Restructuring of TV Channels
Vodafone has announced that the reallocation of various TV and radio channels will continue in May 2026. This measure affects millions of households in Germany and is part of a comprehensive modernization of frequencies that has been underway since 2025. The aim of this transition is to ensure uniform frequency usage and improve network performance. The transition also includes the shutdown of some SD-quality channels, which will gradually be replaced by HD channels. For example, the television channel Das Erste was switched to HD in January 2026.
Vodafone plans to adjust more than eight million connections in over 400 cities by mid-year. Affected households will be informed by Vodafone via postal mail or email about the upcoming changes. Users can check if they are affected by the transition and view the new channel list provided by the automatic channel sorting on the official help page. It is important that users do not disconnect their devices from power on the night of the transition; otherwise, various presets may be lost.
The day after the transition, users may need to initiate a channel scan through their TV settings to receive the new channels. If the picture remains black or if there are picture and sound issues after the transition, it is recommended to reset the device to factory settings. If this does not help, users can contact Vodafone support. For customers receiving their TV programming via a GigaTV Box, no changes are necessary, as the device automatically adopts the new channel list. Vodafone justifies the necessity of this transition by stating that it enables a more powerful network structure.
Higher maximum data transmission rates can be achieved through the new frequency usage. Additionally, manual sorting of TV channels will no longer be necessary, making it easier for users to operate their devices. However, the transition may require some users to adjust, especially if the new sorting significantly differs from the previous one. To receive HD channels, users must have a corresponding receiver or a CI+ module from their provider. Vodafone had already informed about the plans for frequency modernization in 2022.
The measures are part of a long-term strategy to improve the quality of cable television in Germany and meet the demands of modern television technology. The transition is expected to be completed by mid-2026, with specific dates for individual households varying. Vodafone has emphasized that the transition is necessary to meet future requirements for television enjoyment. The new channel list and information about the transition are available on Vodafone's official help page. Users should inform themselves in advance to avoid potential disruptions in TV reception.
