Samsung Pays €300,000 Bonus to Employees
The South Korean electronics company Samsung Electronics has averted a looming strike and plans to pay each employee in the semiconductor division a one-time payment averaging approximately €291,000. This amount corresponds to 509 million won and is contingent on the final corporate profit. The payment is set to occur throughout the year 2026. The agreement between management and the unions came after intense negotiations, which were accompanied by the threat of an 18-day strike. The unions had previously demanded a 7 percent wage increase and improved benefits, while management proposed performance-based compensation.
On Wednesday evening, an agreement was finally reached, which still requires approval from union members. According to Wirtschaftswoche, the approval process runs until May 27, 2026, and is considered secure. In South Korea, Samsung employs around 125,000 workers. With an average bonus payment of €291,000 per person, this would total approximately €36.37 billion.
Samsung expects an annual profit of about €189 billion for the current year, primarily due to the rising demand for memory and chips driven by the AI boom. The agreement stipulates that Samsung will reserve 10.5 percent of the operating profit for employees in the chip division over the next ten years. This arrangement is tied to specific financial targets: the business unit must achieve an operating profit of more than €114 billion between 2026 and 2028 and more than €57 billion between 2029 and 2035. The agreement is seen by many as a sign of appreciation for employees, especially in a sector characterized by intense competitive conditions. The bonus payments could also serve as an incentive to strengthen employee retention and boost productivity.
Samsung has previously indicated similar bonus payments, which, however, depend heavily on business performance. The current agreement could serve as a model for future negotiations with the unions. The unions have emphasized that the agreement is an important step towards fair pay and better working conditions. Member approval is viewed as crucial for the stability of the company and employee satisfaction. The negotiations and subsequent agreement are part of a larger trend in the technology sector, where companies are increasingly under pressure to adequately compensate and motivate their employees. Developments at Samsung could also impact other companies in the industry. The unions and management have agreed that the bonus payments will be made throughout the year 2026, with the exact amount depending on the final business figures.
